Based on a 1930s novel, the film airs on BBC on Christmas in the UK, and watching it in mid June was just a little strange. It revolves around three orphans, the unrelated Fossil sisters, who get trained in the performing arts in order to help their guardian run the house. I must admit that the movie was long, but it didn't exactly drag. Emma Watson's acting was not the best, as expected.
On that note, I remember doing a post a long time ago about how much I did not like Emma Watson. It was probably because of her acting, which more than often crosses into over-acting-land. I liked her in the first few HarryPotter films, but after the third (which killed the rest of the movie series for me), I just thought she looked as if she was trying too hard. Her forced expressions, her false emotions, everything just seemed caked on. But what upset me the most was the image changes for the characters. But that is irrelevant.
In Ballet Shoes, Watson's acting had not improved but I loved her look in it. I think that is what appealed most to me, the setting, the wardrobe, the mood, the aesthetic of the film. That old, retro, 1930s, vintage vibe drew me in, and got me interested.
While we are on the topic of Miss Watson, I came across this spread a long long time ago, and never got to post it.

Although I may not like her acting, I like her as a person. She has the brains, the charm, the style and the personality that makes me admire her. I was so excited when I heard that she was attending Brown University. I thought that maybe I would go visit the place and perhaps run into her, but I had no time to travel up to Rhode Island. And now, as a senior, it is a tad too late.

Emma is gorgeous, both on camera and in person, and I know she gets a lot of criticism for being a not-so-great actress, but actually she's pretty wonderful. Maybe not so much in Harry Potter, but she was great in Ballet Shoes and the play she was in at Brown. Anyway, you should totally come up to Brown and visit! :D
ReplyDeleteI didn't mean to be critical of your opinion of her acting - sorry about that. I totally understand. I probably would be the same way if she didn't go to my school! I haven't actually gotten to meet her...yet! :)
ReplyDeleteThis movie looks really good from the pictures because of the fashion. I'd like to see it myself and see how Emma portrays the role.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Emma Watson's acting ability- sehr bad. But Ballet Shoes! It's such an amazing book- It's always been a favourite just because, I don't know really, I just love it :)

ReplyDeleteanyways, if are stuck at home with absolutly NOTHING to do, you could try out Hayao Miyazaki's films. I dont know if you like japaneses anime, i dont read the graphic novels of them, but i do like HM's films. they have a really good message and a so sweet. his Spirited Away won an award when it came out, 2 favorites of his are Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke.
